Woman remanded in prison for strangling church member

An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday remanded a 49-year-old woman, Josephine Jacob, in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly strangling one of her church members to death.

Jacob who resides at No. 19, Omolore St., Shasha, Lagos, is standing trial on a one-count charge of murder.

Magistrate Joy Ugbomoiko said that the court had no jurisdiction to try the case.

“I hereby remand the defendant in prison, pending the outcome of the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution,” Ugboimoko said.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Babaji Ishiaku, had told the court that the accused on August 19 strangulated one Margaret Safi, 58, to death.

“The defendant, who attended the same church and lives in the same house with the deceased, strangled her to death after they had a quarrel,” Ishiaku said.

He said that the incident took place at the deceased’s residence, No. 19, Omolore St., Shasha, Lagos.

According to him, the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The case was adjourned till October 3 pending the Director of Public Prosecution’s advice.
