Co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement, saying the number is “humbling.”

“This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month,” he said in a statement.

“If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

Interviewed on the NBC Today show, he called the number a major achievement.

“To be able to come into work every day and build things that help a billion people stay connected with the people they care about every month, that’s just unbelievable,” Zuckerberg said.

Facebook said it reached one billion monthly active users on September 14 at 12:45 pm Pacific time. That includes 600 million mobile users.

In its last update in June, Facebook said it had 955 million users including 543 million using mobile devices.

The California company launched a hotly anticipated public offering in May, but has seen its share price tumble amid concerns that it may not be able to grow revenues as users migrate to mobile devices.

Facebook shares, which hit the market at $38 in May, rose 1.2 percent early Thursday to $22.06, having fallen by more than half.

In the NBC interview, Zuckerberg said the company was moving forward despite some rough patches.
“Things go in cycles. We’re obviously in a tough cycle now and that doesn’t help morale, but at the same time, you know, people here are focused on the things that they’re building,” he said.

“I mean, you get to build things here that touch a billion people, which is just not something that you can say at almost anywhere else, so I think that’s really the thing that motivates people.”

Analysts are divided on whether Facebook can leverage its massive user base for advertising and other revenues and still remain loyal to Zuckerberg’s goal of making it a service to connect the world.
Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research remains bearish on Facebook, saying the company has failed to come up with a credible expansion plan.

“OK, one billion users, now what? How do you monetize them?” Chowdhry told AFP. “The problems with Facebook remain the same.”

But Lou Kerner of the Social Internet Fund says the market is underestimating Facebook’s ability to drive revenues higher.

“While Facebook continues to grow its user base, recently surpassing one billion active members, the law of large numbers means that user growth is slowing,” he said.

“However, engagement per user continues to grow rapidly, and that’s the metric that will increasingly drive revenue.”

Since Facebook’s launch, users have produced over 1.13 trillion “likes,” some 140 billion friend connections and have uploaded 219 billion photos.

The social network has also seen 17 billion location-tagged posts, including check-ins, and 62.6 million songs which have been played 22 billion times.

The median age of the user is around 22, according to Facebook.

According to the independent website Social Bakers, the largest number of Facebook users are in the United States, over 166 million, followed by Brazil (58 million), India (55 million), Indonesia (47 million) and Mexico (38 million).

Zuckerberg, in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek released Thursday, said the company was taking the new milestone in stride.

“We don’t want to overly celebrate any particular milestone, so what we do is we have hackathons,” he said.

“So people will be thinking of ideas and working on prototypes and things that we’ll need to do to help connect the next billion people, which I think is pretty cool.”

The growth figures have been clouded by concerns about dubious accounts. Facebook’s own figures show as many as 83 million may come from dubious sources — duplicate accounts, pages for pets and those designed to send spam.

Some 8.7 percent of the accounts may be dodgy, the company said in its quarterly filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

A woman from Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State was yesterday delivered of a set of triplets at a flood victims’ camp.

Though her identity was not revealed, it was learnt that the woman is among those camped at Fr Joseph’s Primary School in Aguleri.

The widow of the late former Senate President, Dr Chuba Okadigbo, representing Anambra North, Margery Okadigbo, relived her experience in Awka, the state capital, when she visited the office of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Mrs Okadigbo, who was in tears, said she wanted to ensure that the relief materials from the Federal Government were distributed by the agency.

The senator noted that the situation in Anambra State had gone beyond party affiliation, saying it should be a collective responsibility of everybody and not the governments alone.

She said the woman at the Aguleri camp delivered a set of triplets – all boys – adding that the victims’ conditions were unbearable, especially the women.

Mrs Okadigbo said: “I am a woman; I know the pains those people are going through. Everybody has been swallowed up by the floods. This is not a good entry for me, seeing my people dying.

“I have been moving around the seven local government areas in my constituency, to ensure that the people are safe. The only local government in my area, which is still free of the floods, is Oyi. The other six are under water.

“Not only that, families are being separated as a result of the floods. Many people will die of hunger and starvation. There is a problem in the land.”

The senator said the National Assembly had called for a supplementary budget because of the problem, adding that many victims would benefit from the government’s relief package.
According to her, the floods may last longer than expected.

NEMA yesterday started the distribution of materials from the Federal Government at various camps in Anambra State.

NEMA’s South East Coordinator Dr Onimode Bamdele was injured when he was evacuating the victims.

How Pastor Adeboye's Picture Saved Me From Kidnappers-RCCG WOMEN LEADER

Mrs. Adebusola Odunaya, women leader, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Cornerstone Parish, Lagos, on Tuesday described her release by kidnappers after six days of captivity as an act of God. It was reported last Thursday that Adebusola had on Saturday, September 21, left home for Lagos to buy beverages and some other items but could not be found for six days.
Fortunately, 37-year-old Adebusola resurfaced on September 27. In a telephone interview with The Punch, Adebusola said although she could not recognise the exact spot, she was held in a bush along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and was released after six days.
Below is how she captured her experience:
“On the fateful day, I was to go to Lagos Island to pick my stock of noodles. It was past 12 noon. When I got to Ishaga area, there was no vehicle there. I decided to go to Agege to board a bus.

“When I got to Agege, there was no direct bus going to Idumota on Lagos Island. I had to board an Oshodi vehicle (molue). As we were already in the vehicle, I heard a conductor calling Idumota. I had to alight from the vehicle I was in and went for that.
“When I got there, the vehicle was still loading. Three women and the driver were inside. I joined them. As soon as I did, the women then asked the driver to move so that they could carry people along the road. I became happy that the vehicle would be fast.
“As we were expecting the vehicle to move, the conductor came and touched me with the handkerchief he was holding. That was when I fell asleep. I did not wake until five days after in a forest along Lagos- Ibadan Expressway.”
Adebusola said when she regained consciousness on the fifth day, she found out that her hair had been cut and the money she wanted to use to pay for the items, about N500, 000 had been taken.
“They ransacked my bag and saw our General Overseer’s (Pastor Enoch Adeboye) picture and Redeemed wristband. They asked me, ‘So you are a member of Redeemed?’ I said yes.
“They said, ‘thank God for your life.’ They now led me through the jungle to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and left me. That was how I was freed from the kidnappers.”

#hmm we give God the glory...

Thousands turned out to watch Londoner Mr Singh as he ran Surrey 5km race in British Columbia in just 35 minutes.

Mr Singh, who was born in India in 1911, ‘barely broke a sweat’ according to his family, as the centenarian is used to running far longer distances.

His trainer Harmander Singh told the BBC before the race: ‘I believe it's probably best that this is the last. I don't think he has anything else to prove.’

Mr Singh says the the secret to staying in shape and being able to conquer his gruelling fitness regime at his age is simple. He eats copious amounts of ginger curry and drinks a lot of tea.

Top Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus-Aboderin on Monday urged Nigerian women to promptly report cases of sexual molestation and abuse to the relevant agencies.
Damasus spoke at programme organized by her organization, ADIVA, weekend, to promote the rights of women and girls.
She expressed concern that many unreported cases of sexual violence had left a lot of women psychologically traumatized.
She challenged mothers to develop a bond with their children especially females, so that they could freely report cases of abuse or molestation by the opposite sex.
“Many parents have bottled up cases of rape that their daughters have gone through due to the fear of being stigmatized by the society“
“Cases like this, should be reported, so that the offenders can be brought to book and debarred him from continuing such acts against other people.
In a separate interview, Dorathy Njemanze, the founder of the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation, urged mothers to pay attention to the upbringing of their children.
“If you are a mother, and your daughter cannot confide in you, then you are a failure,” Njemanze said.
She advised women to take advantage of several government and NGO platforms established to handle cases of abuse against women.

Beautiful actress, Dakore Egbuson Akande, who took a break from acting after her wedding to Olumide,  has made a stunning comeback to her first love-acting.

She acted alongside Nse Ikpe Etim, Catherine Edoho, Kalu Ikeagwu, Femi Jacobs and others. Though she has not featured in movies in recent times, Dakore played the role of Alex in the movie which also featured Carol King, with cameo appearances by Kalu Ikeagwu, Femi Brainard, Femi Jacobs and Chris Attoh.
Directed by Tope Oshin-Ogun, “Journey to Self”, due to hit the big screen next month is an intense story of friendship, sacrifice, empowerment and self-respect. The movie explores some of the social issues confronting women on daily basis. Ashionye, describing the flick as “an intense, dialogue-based movie where the viewer is sure to embark on the same emotional journey as the characters”, said as a proponent of women’s rights and empowerment in the past, she decided to produce this movie as a way of giving the womenfolk a voice. “It was natural therefore, as I set my mind to writing scripts, that one of the first I wrote would deal with some of the issues women face in their relationships both with men and their fellow women. Alley Kat Media looks forward to partnering with Fressia Entertainment in future.” he added.

I can't wait to watch this movie......

The House of Representatives, on Monday night, said it would probe the alleged debt of N140.9 billion, being outstanding debt of a businessman, Femi Otedola, to Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Zakari Mohammed, in a statement, said “we have observed with interest, the payment of N140.9 billion, being outstanding debt of Mr Otedola to AMCON. This payment was credited to AMCON’s Managing Director, Mustafa Chike-Obi.
“Obi confirmed that AMCON board met on Thursday and approved the transfer of the business-man’s assets, as well as undisclosed cash to AMCON as full payment and final settlement of Otedola’s liabilities,” he noted.
“The seventh House of Representatives would, on return from its one-week oversight tour, constitute a committee to investigate the amount and the assets so transferred to AMCOM.
“It is imperative to state that with the state of our economy, this transaction was done with confidentiality and secrecy.
“It is curious that AMCON, being a government establishment which is under the purview of the National Assembly, could do that without the knowledge of the House.
“To say the least, the procedure is not acceptable. The National Assembly would be interested in getting full details of the transaction,” it read.
