ASABE Episode 2

Laraba was so engrossed in the programme she was watching that she didn’t hear her mother scream her name, it was the popular AY show that was being televised on African magic, herself and Ladidi laughed so hard that they didn’t even notice their mum walk into their room, Madam Lydia immediately took the remote control and turned off the TV, it was then the girls noticed her presence…
Laraba: ahn ahn…Mummy this isn’t right!
Madam Lydia: I have been calling you but of course how will you hear, when all your attention is on AY show, I am sure AY wasn’t this lazy that’s why he is where he is today, now the two of you should go downstairs and clean up that kitchen right now!
Laraba and Ladidi murmured their way downstairs as they continued to wonder why their parents would allow Asabe stay in campus and come home only weekends, Laraba told Ladidi not to do the laundry but just clean the kitchen since Asabe was going to be home the following day being Friday, both girls laughed and screamed ‘woo-hoo….chief house help is coming home’.
Its 7.30pm on Friday  evening, no one had heard from Asabe let alone an sms to say she won’t be coming home, Laraba and Ladidi were already disappointed as they just couldn’t imagine themselves doing the laundry on Saturday…..Madam Lydia was in the living room watching Tinsel when she heard her husband’s footsteps ,she has become so familiar with his footsteps after 28years of marriage ,she could tell from afar,Mr. Dan was coming downstairs, as soon as he got closer, she asked without taking her gaze off the TV, darling did Asabe call or sent you an sms to say she won’t be coming home today?
Mr. Dan: oooooh my bad, yes she did, she said she couldn’t  get through to you ,probably network issues
Madam Lydia: you should have told me ,so I plan better,the use of my time.
Mr. Dan: hahahaha… I just don’t understand you, you despise Asabe so much, and I made sure she is far away from you so you can at least be happy 24hrs(he said this  sarcastically), since she steals your joy, why do you all of a sudden you want her so close again?
Madam Lydia: Oh please, I just needed her to come around and help with the house chores.
Mr. Dan : oh I see, what happened to Laraba and Ladidi? Are you sure you have an iota of love for those girls? Because if you do, you will bring them up in the right way. The last time I asked Laraba to make white rice for Junior and I ,she practically just parboiled the rice and brought us half done rice, now Lydia, let’s be realistic, no man would put such in his house, no matter how beautiful she looks, I pray you amend all these before it’s too late!
Madam Lydia: (adjust herself on the Italian leather cushion chair, she looked like she has being told the bitter truth)it is not the work of the mother alone(she finally managed to say something after all)
Mr. Dan: *smiles* Yes I know, but the mother has to put in effort before the father supports, look Lydia instead of waiting for Asabe to come and do the house chores, start putting my daughters through, I beg you in God’s name, if you put half the effort you use in making Asabe miserable into making your daughters well trained, I am sure you will be a happy mother at the end of the day.
At this point she couldn’t say a word, Mr Dan decided to lighten her mood and so he  broke the news of them hosting the family of the famous Otunba Gbenga Moses for Dinner next week Saturday, also told her that it’s possible otunba’s  first son Dotun who stays in Atlanta would be around by  weekend , so she should let him know how much it would cost her to put together a very good dinner for both families. Madam  Lydia was over the moon as she would be hosting one of the movers and shakers of the ruling party ,she couldn’t contain her joy as it almost broke the membrane of her heart, she assured her husband that she would make sure she gives them a five star treatment ,but pleaded with her husband that Asabe comes home that weekend as she would be needing her help,Mr. Dan nodded in affirmation , she was so excited that she hugged and kissed Mr. Dan passionately. She immediately served dinner and just then they noticed , Laraba wasn’t around for dinner, Madam Lydia immediately sent Ladidi to go call Laraba from her room that it was dinner time, just as soon as Ladidi was about going upstairs, Junior said “ mum that won’t be necessary, she went out with that uncle that plaits his hair like a woman’ Ladidi immediately winked at junior as if to say shut up,but Junior ignored and continued ‘ mummy she might not be coming back tonight since she took along with her a pair of jeans and a polo shirt’.
Mr. Dan for some minutes couldn’t utter a word as he was trying to swallow the large junk of peppered gizzard he was chewing, he afterwards dropped his cutleries and told Madam Lydia that he gives Laraba two hours to get back home or seize to be a member of this family! He continued “ no reasonable child will leave her house by this time of the day without the permission of her parents’, I won’t take this , Lydia the two hours given has started counting”. Madam Lydia took her phone and frantically started dialling Laraba’s number, it was switched off, she asked Ladidi if Laraba has another number she could try calling her with, she said yes and brought out an etisalat number, immediately she dialled the number Laraba picked, and she said mummy who gave you this number? Madam Lydia replied ‘you are a disgrace, now your father has asked me to tell you to come back home within an hour or you seize to be part of Mr. Dan Toro’s family’ she hung up as soon as she was done talking….\

ASABE.....Episode One

Asabe stood by the window in her room and wept bitterly wondering if she would have been going through all these if her mother was alive, she watched as the rain washed away the dirt on the street and wished God would wipe her tears that way, she brought down a box where she kept her favourite wears ,she equally hid a jewellery which used to belong to her mother and now hers ,quite expensive and then sat on her bed to think about all that has being running through her pretty mind, she resolved to sell it off so she could pay for her JAMB exams, since her step-mum(Madam Lydia) seized the money her father gave to her to pay, Madam Lydia always told Asabe she was going to amount to no good in life so there is no point wasting her husband’s hard earned funds on her, Shortly Asabe heard footsteps ,the person seemed to be coming towards her room, and then she remembered her step mum had told her  she was going to wash her children’s clothes that morning ,she immediately returned the box to its place and just as she tried to get out of the room to get  the clothes, she bumped into Madam Lydia, and of course Asabe knew the next thing was a slap on her beautiful face (SHE WASN’T DISAPPOINTED) madam Lydia went on ranting ‘ were you waiting for me to come  wake you up, useless child, good for nothing, you are just like your mother, very lazy’ Asabe wept as she continued to insult her, she instructed Asabe to finish washing in one hour and go ahead to clean her children’s room.
Ever since the death of Madam Beatrice (Asabe’s mother) Madam Lydia has virtually being treating her like a slave, Asabe’s eats after her children must have all eaten, Asabe does all the domestic work, Asabe’s father is a politician and is hardly around, but whenever he is, Madam Lydia treats Asabe nicely, so Mr Dan finds it difficult to believe Asabe’s tales most times.
On Asabe’s way to the market that  day, she remembered to take the jewellery along with her, she made a stop at  mallam Tanko’s shop, Tanko who has always admired Asabe and once asked her to forget about going to school and marry him since no matter how educated a woman is ,she has to end up in a man’s house was elated to see Asabe in his shop, he quickly gave Asabe his seat (since it was more comfortable) and sat on the wooden chair, Asabe never liked Tanko but she had to keep a smiling face just because of her predicament , she got comfortable and told Tanko why she was there, Tanko asked to see the jewellery ,upon seeing it he exclaimed…’wayo Allah, haba why I wan sell am, this is pure gold fa’ ,Asabe didn’t want to tell him she’s selling it because of her JAMB exams,Tanko might not help her, so she told him, she wanted to raise money to pay for her Uncle’s hospital bills, as soon as Tanko heard this , he decided to buy it from Asabe, since he buys from customers to sell as well, he bought it for N45,600, Asabe was shocked, she never envisaged it would sell that much, she went round to get the things she came to buy and headed home joyfully. Madam Lydia noticed Asabe dancing in the kitchen and was wondering if she won a lottery, she went on to ask, what’s the celebration for? Asabe knowing very well that Madam Lydia is a ‘kill joy’ said, nothing ma, I am just praising God ,if not for anything but for the gift of life, madam Lydia hissed and made her way out of the kitchen and said, ‘as if there is anything good about your miserable life’.
Asabe took JAMB that year and failed, she was so disappointed and felt like the whole world was on her shoulders, but she decided not to give up and immediately applied for a teaching course at the Federal College of Education ,her father  paid her fees to the school directly, madam Lydia this time couldn’t manoeuvre the funds, Asabe secretly applied for Jamb while she started her teaching course, she never gave up on her dreams of having a BSc, her father told her to stay in the hostel and come home only weekends, Asabe was so happy, it felt like an angel reveal to her father what she has being going through.
Madam Lydia had three kids, two girls and a boy (Laraba,Ladidi and Daniel who is usually called Junior) her girls were only good at boiling water ,so madam Lydia had a tough time, all they do is come back from school and ask for their food, watch African magic and then sleep, madam Lydia however pleaded with her husband to ask Asabe to come home, that she could be going to school from home, Mr. Dan refused and said  he wanted Asabe to concentrate on her studies, at this point madam Lydia flared up
‘is she the only one schooling? My kids are  also in the university, what is she studying? Medicine? She has to come back home or you get me a house help! Can’t continue this way! ‘

Oh yes! A house help you shall get! That girl needs to study, your kids are in the University, she is just in Federal college of Education, and you are still not happy, why do you despise her so much? Thought you promised to treat her like your own daughter,Mr. Dan angrily retired to his bedroom and madam Lydia stood there shaking like a toad that suddenly bumped into hot water, as soon as she calmed down she went to the kitchen to see if Laraba had cleaned up the kitchen as she instructed, but to her disappointment, she met it same way…still unkempt, she angrily called out…..L.A.R.A.B.AAAAAAAAA.

  Things got more  complicated between Alex and Simisola,Alex now had all the reasons in the world to pester Onome, but of course Dr. Efosa guarded his dearly beloved Onome, for him that was is his one stop lady, a lady in whom he’s found all he needs in a woman.
Alex would call Onome even at ungodly hours just to get her attention, Onome at some point got fed up and told Alex she was in love with another, she explained to him that she had moved on and advised him to do same, Alex however did not give and continued to push his luck.
Three  months later Onome’s mother took ill and was hospitalised,he situation was getting worse and Dr. Efosa got uncomfortable with it, he felt the medical amenities available in the village wasn’t good enough and advised Onome to bring her mother from the village to the city, which she did. Dr. Efosa made sure she got the best medical services available, mama Onome was overwhelmed with the love showered on her by Dr. Efosa, as soon as she was discharged from the hospital, she immediately called Onome;
Mama Onome : My pikin ,I just wan thank you for how you bin don de take care of me, maybe I for don kpeme if you nor come carry me from village.
Onome: God forbid mama, you shall live to see your great grand children
Mama Onome: How?
Onome: ahn ahn , mama I make you vex?
Mama Onome: This one wen you de do nor pass vex? Wetin de worry you? That man nor fine reach?him fine, him get better work, anyhow person must sick, so him nor fit broke, you self dey kampe, you get better work, tell me wetin you de wait?
Onome: hahahahaha maale(mummy) ah !relax, I nor de wait anything, but as soon as him don ready we go marry
Mama Onome:ready? You go make am ready, nor wait, man nor de ever ready!
Onome: ( in order to calm her mother down) ok mama nor worry, I go make am ready very  v-e-ry soon
Mama Onome: ehen na now you de talk.

Dr. Efosa encouraged mama Onome to remain in the city, but she refused as she couldn’t afford to let go her fish business in the village, she returned back to the village after Dr. Efosa took her for a massive shopping and also told her of his intention to marry her daughter but of course told mama Onome not to break the news to Onome as the proposal was meant to be a surprise, Mama Onome got to the village and became a village champion , she bragged about all her experiences in the city , most especially about her daughter who is doing well and ‘ she go soon marry sef’ she always added.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
It was Onome’s birthday three weeks later and Alex felt it was a good opportunity to make Onome understand he wants her back in his life for good. Onome dressed so nice that day like there was more to it asides that day been her birthday.She got to the office and met a lot of gifts from colleagues on her desk, but one which drew her attention was a card which had a rose attached to it, she was eager to open it as she thought it was from the YIN to her YANG, Dr. Efosa, she opened it speedily and to her surprise it was from Alex! She immediately helped herself with the waste bin by her desk and said in a low but irritated tone ‘ what effrontery!’ Efe immediately asked what was getting her nerves worked up
Onome: Can you imagine this idiot sending me a card and a rose
Efe: well a brother has to keep trying; you know what they say about not giving up right?
Onome: but I have told him severally that it’s over
Efe: awwww, sorry boo, doesn’t look like this brother feels the way you feel, he still loves you…maybe ….just maybe.lol. Oh please smile, it’s your birthday (go shawty).
They were still talking when Onome’s intercom rang, it was Laura ,the receptionist, she called to inform Onome that she’s got a delivery to take, Efe ran to the reception before Onome could ,Laura said to Efe ‘ you are what Yoruba people call Gbegborun….’ Efe just gave her a spiteful look and said ‘ wareva(in jenifas tone)’ Onome ignored the two drama queens and took her delivery, it was a cake  from Dr. Efosa with a rose by it ,on which hung a ring, written on the cake was ‘will you marry me?’ As soon as the delivery man stepped out Dr. Efosa called Onome and said;
‘ Happy birthday my love, the weight beneath my wings, I have known you for a short while,but I have never felt right about this until now,Miss Onome Freeman will you marry me’
Onome: (with so much tears in her eyes) yes! yes!! Yes!!! I will marry you Dr. Efosa Smith
Dr. Efosa told her to come outside her office, she came out with the ring and he put it on her finger, in tears Onome asked ‘Promise me I will be the only woman in your life”
Dr. Efosa: ermmmmm, there will be one other woman
Onome: Excuse me?
Dr Efosa: Yea, but she will call  you mummy
At this point ,she couldn’t help but laugh , a few other colleagues apart from Efe were outside to clap and scream.
Onome immediately called her mum to share the good news, it was the best birthday ever as far as Onome was concerned.As soon as Mimi got to know,she  rejoiced with Efe and asked;
Mimi: so whats gonna happen to Alex?
Onome: does it look like I care?
Mimi: He called yesterday to say he wanted to come see you
Onome: ehn? Please ehn kindly tell him I belong to someone else now, he had his chance he used it the way he felt like, why is he now acting like a chicken beaten by the rain?
They both laughed and ended the call. Alex however called Onome later in the day to congratulate her, he said;
Alex: Mimi told me I lost you to another, I feel like I lost a part of me, I feel defeated and ashamed, I pray time heals this wound in my heart, congratulations, it hurts though, but its all my fault. All t.e best.

Six months later Onome Freeman became Mrs. Efosa Smith and they lived happily ever after.
